We've been meeting some great people at our hostel in Johannesburg. A group of us decided to hit the town tonight to watch the Third Place World Cup Match. The group we were with was from all around the world, and we can't imagine a better group of people to spend the evening with. We met Ken, from Australia, and Michaela, from North Carolina, at our hostel. They had recently met some people at a business conference--Tanea, from Portugal, and Laura, a local Johannesburg girl. The six of us piled into Laura's car and went to a place called Melrose Arch, similar to Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, to eat dinner and watch the game.
There were hundreds of people walking the streets and watching the game on a big screen outdoors with tables, drinks, and food. Luckily for us, Laura used her hometown connections to get us a table, otherwise we would have never been able to sit down. Both Germany and Uruguay were well-represented by many fans from all over the world.
We love the food and drink prices here. Everything seems so cheap to us, but the locals are complaining that prices are inflated due to the World Cup. A six person meal with drinks cost our table 600 Rand, which equates roughly to less than $100...TOTAL!
After the game, we walked down the street to a plaza where there was another crowd and big screen. Since the game was over, there was live music on the stage and everybody was dancing. The entire night was the perfect atmosphere, and it was exactly what we were wanted for our first night in Africa.
The weather was a little chilly, since it is the middle of winter here. Doug suffered through it without the warm clothes from his suitcase, which was still somewhere between LA and South Africa. Dena's suitcase had arrived in the afternoon and we picked it up from the airport, so at least she had some warm clothes and shared her beanie and gloves with poor Doug.
